Our Top Tips for Moving Day

On Moving day, it is a very busy and can be exhausting, here are our top tips to make moving as easy and stress free as possible!

Moving into a new home can be exciting but also overwhelming, especially when you're faced with a mountain of boxes. To help make the transition smoother and reduce stress, here are the top ten tips on what to have on hand and what to do as soon as you move in:

1. Essentials Box (First Day Survival Kit)

Pack a box or bag with all the essentials you’ll need right away, such as:
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.)
  • Medications
  • Phone charger
  • A change of clothes
  • Snacks and bottled water
  • Basic cleaning supplies (wipes, paper towels, trash bags)

2. Set Up Bedding First

Make your bed as soon as possible. Set up your mattress, make the beds so you have a comfortable place to rest after a long day of unpacking. This helps you feel at home and provides a sense of accomplishment.

3. Label and Organise Boxes by Room

If possible, label your boxes clearly with the room name and a list of contents. This will help you find things more easily. For example, label “Kitchen - Pots & Pans” or “Living Room - Electronics.”

4. Essential Kitchen Items

Make sure to unpack key kitchen items early:
  • A few cooking utensils
  • A frying pan or pot
  • Plates, bowls, and cups
  • Coffee maker or kettle
  • Basic cleaning supplies (dish soap, sponges) This allows you to cook or prepare quick meals while unpacking the rest.

5. Set Up Utilities and Internet

Ensure all essential utilities (electricity, water, gas) are turned on before you move in. If you haven't already arranged your internet and cable, try to do that as soon as possible so you can stay connected and entertained.

6. Unpack High-Priority Items

Focus on unpacking the items you need the most. Start with:
  • Toiletries and cleaning supplies
  • Clothing for the next few days
  • Important documents or papers you’ll need immediately
  • Any electronics or work-related tools (laptop, printer, etc.)

7. Install Basic Safety Features

Check the smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and security systems to make sure they’re working. If necessary, replace batteries or update any expired equipment.

8. Create a Household Maintenance Checklist

As soon as you move in, make a checklist of things to do around the house:
  • Test the HVAC system
  • Check for any leaks in plumbing
  • Look for any potential safety hazards or repairs Having a maintenance plan ensures your home stays in good condition and avoids major surprises.

9. Set Up Your Entryway

Make your entryway functional by adding hooks for coats, a small table for keys, and a basket for shoes. This will prevent clutter and make it easier to settle in as you unpack.

10. Familiarise Yourself with the Home’s Layout

Walk around the house to familiarise yourself with the layout, location of switches, circuit breakers, water shut-off valves, and storage spaces. This helps you feel more comfortable and organized as you get settled in.

By prioritizing these tips, you'll make your move-in process more efficient and less stressful, allowing you to enjoy your new home without the hassle of rummaging through boxes.
